LinkedIn headline keywords — how to choose the words that get you found

Your headline keywords determine whether you appear in recruiter and client searches. The right keywords put you on page 1. Generic buzzwords leave you invisible.

Why headline keywords carry 3-5× more weight than keywords anywhere else

LinkedIn's algorithm weights the headline field more heavily than any other profile section when matching profiles to search queries. A keyword in your headline carries approximately 3–5× the search weight of the same keyword in your skills section or job description. Your headline keyword choices are the single highest-leverage optimisation you can make.

How to find the right keywords for your headline

METHOD 01
Search for your target role and read the top results
Type your target job title into LinkedIn's search bar and look at the top 10 profiles that appear. Note which keywords they use in their headlines — these are the terms LinkedIn's algorithm has determined are most relevant. This is the most direct way to identify what keywords actually rank.
METHOD 02
Read 10–15 job descriptions for your target role
Job descriptions contain the exact language recruiters use when searching. The skills, tools, and phrases that appear most frequently across multiple JDs are your highest-value headline keywords. Exact tool names (Salesforce, Figma, Python) almost always outperform category descriptions (CRM software, design tools, programming).
METHOD 03
Check your LinkedIn Analytics search terms
LinkedIn shows the search terms people used to find your profile in the past 90 days (Analytics → Search appearances). This tells you exactly which queries are already bringing people to you — and which valuable queries you are missing. Use this to identify keyword gaps.

Keywords to avoid — buzzwords with zero search weight

Recruiters never search these words. Replace each one with the specific skill or achievement it describes: passionate · results-driven · dynamic · innovative · strategic thinker · motivated · enthusiastic · dedicated · hardworking · team player · go-getter · thought leader · guru · ninja · rockstar · wizard · problem solver · change agent · visionary · disruptive

FAQ

Aim for 3–6 distinct keyword terms, depending on their specificity. A 220-character headline naturally accommodates 4–5 meaningful keyword phrases with | separators. Do not force more keywords than the character limit supports cleanly — readability matters alongside search optimisation.
Both. Your most common keyword (your exact job title) belongs in the first 60 characters for maximum broad search visibility. Your niche keywords (specific tool, industry, or specialisation) differentiate you from thousands of other profiles with the same title. The combination of broad + specific is what makes a headline both findable and clickable.
Check LinkedIn Analytics → Search appearances weekly. Look for which search terms are bringing people to your profile. If you are not appearing for your target role keyword, it means either the keyword is not in your headline or your profile authority is too low to rank on that term. Add the keyword and check again in 2–3 weeks.
